Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award is DBIA’s Highest Honor
The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the only organization that defines, teaches, and promotes best practices in design-build, has announced Craig H. Unger, DBIA, as the 2014 recipient of the DBIA Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Unger is the Principal and CEO of Unger Security Solutions, LLC, providing consulting services for acquisition management, project delivery and advisory services for the security and detention environment.
The Brunelleschi Award is the highest honor DBIA bestows. It is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to the design and construction industry through outstanding leadership and the advancement of integrated design-build project delivery. Each recipient of this award has demonstrated originality, vision and breadth over the course of their professional life. The prestigious award is named for Filippo Brunelleschi, the Florentine master builder whose most notable work is the Duomo of the Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.
“In addition to being integral in the founding of DBIA and one of the organization’s most active leaders, Craig has logged thousands of miles in the air to bring education on design-build best practices and training to hundreds of industry professionals, owners and communities seeking to benefit from design-build across the country,” says Jim Whitaker, DBIA 2014 National Board Chair. “We are proud to honor Craig as the 2014 recipient of the DBIA Brunelleschi Award.”
With major federal legislative initiatives DBIA is championing, Mr. Unger has been instrumental through his leadership as DBIA’s Federal Sector Committee Chair. He has helped to identify key obstacles to effective design-build in the federal sector and develop short- and long-term strategies to address them. Mr. Unger is also working to advance Design-Build Done Right™ to facilitate positive change in federal agencies and recommending needed training and resources to assist owners in executing design-build more effectively.
Mr. Unger was appointed by the Attorney General of the United States to serve as the Justice Department’s Federal Detention Trustee in 2001. As a career civil servant with more than 26 years of service, Mr. Unger achieved the highest leadership role, Senior Executive Service, before retiring as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer with the Justice Department. Mr. Unger also served as President of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA 2003-2004) and is regarded as a leader of the integrated project delivery design-build movement in the public sector.
He is a nationally recognized lecturer throughout the industry and has authored numerous articles and publications, including United States Congressional reports and testimony. Mr. Unger received a bachelor of arts in accounting from Bloomsburg University, an MBA from West Virginia University and attended Harvard University for post-graduate work. Mr. Unger is also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
