Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed

The project had a hard deadline of eight months for a project that, on a normal schedule, would have required 16 months. And, during the design process, the owner decided that they wanted to reuse some kitchen equipment from a decommissioned cafeteria on another campus; this required the design-build team to scramble to identify what equipment was usable within the new design. In addition, all designs had to comply with blast protection criteria, ICD705, UFC and local health department requirements, already within the space of existing building infrastructure. With coordination and teamwork, the project was delivered on schedule.

Summary

The new Dining Hall Renovation on the first floor of Erskine Hall is the latest staff amenity to be completed at the Intelligence Community Campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The 57,600-square-foot project includes a new 420-seat Dining Commons and Servery, full kitchen, equipment and staff support. The project was carefully designed to comply with blast protection criteria, ICD705, UFC and local health department requirements, as well as accommodation of existing building infrastructure and fire egress already in place, serving the occupied upper floors of Erskine Hall.
