DBIA Announces National Design-Build Student Competition Finalists

Washington, D.C., Oct. 28, 2013

2013 finalists include teams from Auburn University, California State University – Sacramento and Colorado State University

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build, has announced the three finalists in its 2013 National Design-Build Student Competition. Student teams from Auburn University, California State University – Sacramento and Colorado State University will advance to the final round of the competition.

The three student teams will travel to compete at DBIA’s upcoming Design-Build Conference and Expo before a prestigious jury and conference attendees. The teams will present before a panel of interviewers – mirroring the second phase of a true design-build competition – to answer questions and defend their design and construction plans. A final winner in the 2013 competition will be selected by the jury on November 5.

“It is vital that we educate and prepare the next generation of ‘design-build done right’ practitioners. We applaud these universities that recognize the value of ‘design-build done right’ and are preparing students to gain a competitive edge when they enter the design and construction industry workforce,” says Lisa Washington, Executive Director/CEO, DBIA. “DBIA’s National Design-Build Student Competition helps to address the critical task of attracting more students into our industry and teaching them why design-build is fast becoming the project delivery method of choice.”

Forty teams of students from 29 well-known universities across the country entered the competition to put into practice the theory of design-build they are learning in school. The teams worked collaboratively to develop a design and construction plan for a $29-million, 80,000-square-foot residence hall. A national jury comprised of industry veterans selected nine regional winners of the first phase of the competition based on their submissions. From the group of nine, the jury “short-listed” three student teams from Auburn University, California State University – Sacramento and Colorado State University.
