Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed

The design-build team worked collaboratively with the owner to evaluate alternatives to the costly underground tanks that would maintain the aesthetics of the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains region. Balancing these aesthetic goals with acceptable cost and schedule impacts, the team and the owner were able to develop a plan that complements, rather than intrudes on the landscape. This, in addition to several other value engineering initiatives, shaved $13M off the project cost.

Summary

Bush Brothers & Company’s new Process Water Reclamation Facility (PWRF) is located in a rural location in the Great Smoky Mountains approximately 40 miles from Knoxville. The area has no public water utility; source water is obtained for processing needs from wells and springs near the PWRF. Following use and treatment, the vegetable wastewater is spray-irrigated over approximately 900 acres of owned property. Safety played a key role in success and as a result: after more than 300,000 hours of work, the project had zero lost-time incidents. This socially responsible project was delivered on time below the guaranteed maximum price and gives Bush Brothers greater sustainability and management over its water use.
